Sierra Leone
All of Sierra Leone’s 6.5 million people are vulnerable to malaria, which accounts for two million outpatient visits a year. To prevent transmission and improve human health, the U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI) distributes insecticide-treated nets and supports preventive treatment for pregnant women, procures diagnostic tests and antimalarials, and supports health system strengthening through workforce training and improved health information.
Specifically, PMI funded PMI Measure Malaria (PMM) to support the National Malaria Control Program (NMCP) to strengthen malaria surveillance and routine health information systems to record cases and prevalence. PMM activities in Niger included helping develop the national malaria strategy and malaria surveillance, monitoring, and evaluation (SME) plan; support routine SME technical working group meetings to foster collaboration, improve implementation of activities, and report and disseminate malaria information; and produce and disseminate quarterly surveillance bulletins to guide decision making at all levels of the health system.
