Burundi
Malaria remains the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in Burundi. In 2019 a malaria epidemic raged, causing 7.2 million confirmed cases and more than 2,600 fatalities. The U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI) and USAID are committed to providing the National Malaria Control Program (NMCP) support to strengthen and sustain malaria interventions, while emphasizing increased capacity development and key health information system strengthening.
PMI funded PMI Measure Malaria (PMM) to provide technical support to the NMCP and collaborate with the Ministry of Public Health to strengthen malaria surveillance, monitoring and evaluation (SME), establish the malaria SME technical working group, and organize SME workshops to train NMCP staff. These efforts transferred skills to local actors while continuing to support them with tools and procedures for data quality review and assessments. To spur increased use of data to fight malaria, PMM helped to strengthen the health information systems to produce quarterly malaria bulletins to disseminate current data across Burundi.
